Ty Derw is about a mile and a half from the junction of the A470 with the A458 at Mallwyd. If you have a satnav then our postcode, SY20 9LR, should bring you to the gate.
Travelling from London take the M1 or M40, depending on where you start and then the M6 and M54 towards Shrewsbury. When the M54 finishes continue on the A5 following the signs to Welshpool. At Welshpool take the A458 signposted Machynlleth and continue until you come to the roundabout at Mallwyd. Turn right towards Dolgellau and after about 1.5 miles look out for our brown tourism signs indicating a left turn. Follow the lane for about 1/4 mile until you come to Ty Derw on the right.
From the North, eg Manchester or Liverpool, find your way to the Chester area and then follow the signs for Wrexham and Oswestry (by-passing both). Once past Oswestry look out for a right turn onto the A495 signposted Machynlleth. Follow this road through Meifod until you reach the A458 where you turn right. Continue to the roundabout at Mallwyd. Turn right towards Dolgellau taking the A470. After about 1.5 miles look out for our brown tourism signs and follow them along the lane. Ty Derw is on the right about a quarter of a mile along the lane.
From the West country or South Wales; either take the M5 then M54, then follow the directions as from London or, if you prefer the scenic route, take the A470 road through Wales - you will need your sat-nav or a map - until you reach the roundabout at Mallwyd. Go straight on towards Dolgellau and after about 1.5 miles look out for our brown tourism signs and follow them along the lane. Ty Derw is on the right about a quarter of a mile along the lane.
Flying in from abroad? Liverpool, Manchester or Birmingham are the best airports to use.
Public Transport? You can get to Machynlleth by train via Shrewsbury BUT once you are here public transport is very limited. Dinas Mawddwy has a very modest bus service indeed and, in all fairness, if you wish to holiday by public transport in this area it is better to find somewhere in Machynlleth or Dolgellau which are both on good bus routes.
Dinas Mawddwy lies just inside the Snowdonia National Park and the County of Gwynedd.
It is about 45 miles west of Shrewsbury, about 13 miles from Machynlleth and 10 miles from Dolgellau. The latter two towns have good day-to-day shopping centres. The nearest larger town is Aberystwyth, about 32 miles. As mentioned above public transport is limited but regular trains run from Machynlleth to Aberystwyth, Shrewsbury and Pwllheli. In August there are steam specials from Machynlleth and other local station. These trains run along the beautiful Welsh coast and it is a very scenic route.
There is a health centre in Cemmaes Road and the local doctors are helpful to visitors. Minor injuries clinics are available in Dolgellau and Machynlleth where you will also find pharmacies.
Facilities within the village and neighbouring Mallwyd include the village pub, The Red Lion (Y Llew Coch) which serves good pub grub and provides a warm Welsh welcome, and hotels which cater for non-residents. Shopping is limited; the filling station at Mallwyd sells day to day groceries and newspapers and the Meirion Mill is a large shop catering for the tourist market.
