Ty Derw lies just outside the village of Dinas Mawddwy and is perfectly situated for a holiday in Snowdonia which with its glorious lakes and mountains is an area of outstanding beauty and a National Park. A short drive over Oerddrws Pass (Bwlch Oerddrws), one of the highest in Wales, brings you to the small town of Dolgellau which stands at the foot of Cadair Idris. 12 miles southwest lies Machynlleth, once the ancient capital of Wales and today a busy market town (market day Wednesday) which offers delightful shops and galleries (including Y Tabernacl - the Museum of Modern Art in Wales), good pubs and restaurants and, of course, the seat of the ancient parliament of Owain Glyndwr. The coast is not far from Ty Derw and about 20 miles away is Aberdovey, the jewel of Cardigan Bay. A delightful village, Aberdovey lies at the mouth of the Dyfi Estuary and has miles of golden sands, interesting shops and galleries and The Penhellig Arms - Welsh Seafood Pub of the year 2005. Bala, Talyllyn and Vyrnwy lakes are all within easy driving distance as are many tourist attractions including several narrow gauge railways, Snowdon itself with the nearby `electric mountain', the Centre for Alternative Technology and the famous `Italian' village of Portmeirion. For those feeling less ambitious a 15 minute walk from Ty Derw leads to the centre of Dinas with its village pub Y Llew Coch (The Red Lion) or, in the other direction via Pen y Bont to the Brigands Inn at Mallwyd where refreshments may be obtained! |
